Prevent W-Sitting in Your Kids

Why Should W-Sitting be Prevented?

According to pediatricservices.com, there are many reasons why we should prevent our kids from sitting out like this.

1. Orthopedic concerns. “W-sitting can predispose a child to hip dislocation, so if there is a history of hip dysplasia, or a concern has been raised in the past, this position should be avoided,” the website reports.

2. If muscle tightness is a concern, W-sitting can aggravate the situation. That is because W-sitting positions “the hamstrings, hip adductors, internal rotators and heel cords in an extremely shortened range. If a child is prone to tightness or contractures, encourage another pattern of sitting.”

3. W-sitting discourages hand preference or movements because of the absence of hip rotation. As he is already comfortable, the child will not be encouraged to reach items beside or behind him. He is only focused on what is in front of him.

“Children with internal femoral torsion may have a habit of sitting in a W position, or on their feet, rather than crossed legged. Some children will trip over their feet if they toe in excessively. There is not a delay in the normal development of sitting, crawling, and walking.”–Concordortho.com

The best thing to do about it is to keep your child from making it a habit of sitting like that. When she is still younger, you can dissuade her by changing her position and telling her to sit differently. It is really best if we observe our children closely especially when they are playing so that we will know how they are sitting.

W-sitting Dindin

Dindin is also W-sitting sometimes

In the past, Dindin seldom sat like this but recently, I noticed that she is doing it more frequently. The good thing is, she does not stay in one position for long. But just to make sure, whenever I see her sitting like that, I tell her to sit properly in a nice way and then she would straighten her legs.

Keeping the Umbilical Cord in a Cord Blood Bank

Technology is such that we can now store the umbilical cord of our newborn children in a cord blood bank.

The purpose of cord blood banking is anything but emotional, but rather more for medical reasons. This may be used in the future for treating diseases and immune system failures when the child becomes older or becomes an adult. These facilities for storing the umbilical cord have been developed in the 1990s because of the so many new diseases discovered and the scientific connection of cure from the umbilical cord that is cut at birth.

There is just so much mystery to that strand of cord that connects the mother to her unborn child while in the womb. It is the tube that carries nutrients from the mother’s body to the fetus. And now, science has proven that samples from this part may lead to the prevention and cure of many ailments when the child grows older. It is just amazing how God has created our bodies.

Anyway, here in the Philippines, I am not aware of any public cord banks. There may be private banks for cord life but I heard that it can really be expensive. And I am not sure of how secure is the storage, that it cannot be tampered with because we have brownouts and blackouts here in the country.

So it should not be a wonder to you if Dindin does not have her umbilical cord stored in anyway, except for the small dried remnant that fell off her bellybutton about two weeks of her life. My mother kept it in a bottle.

I am not sure when the cord blood bank would be fully operational and accessible to Filipinos. But it is indeed a wonderful opportunity.

Health Conscious Kids

PhotobucketThat little buffed guy pictured above is C.J. Senter, a 10-year-old boy who already has his workout video. He is now called C.J. The Workout Kid. But people are concerned why this boy is so buffed. They are wondering because he might be abused in the sense that he is made to do things that are not appropriate for his age.

But it seemed that C.J. had been exposed to exercising and keeping fit early. He was encouraged by his football coach when he was 5 years old to get some exercise. Since then, he has found a liking to working out and he has been exercising ever since to keep fit. He has his own routines and he does this three times a week. But he does not neglect his school work because he only works out after he is done with his homework. He lives in Locust Grove, Georgia.

While some people are concerned over C.J., I am not. I am not surprised either because Dindin had been health conscious when she was months old. We noticed that whenever people will tell her that she is gaining weight, she would then reduced her milk consumption. And it was really obvious. That is why she was never fat.

After eating or having her milk, she would get up, run around, or jump. She does not like candies and other sweet things but there was a time that she did eat about three nibbles of chocolates and after that, she spent about 15 minutes doing push ups, jumping jacks, and jogging in place. And she is not hyperactive to the point of moving senselessly. She is very intentional in her movements, moving so much that she could burn calories. I realized that she was really concerned about her figure when, after guzzling a bottle of milk, she noticed that her tummy was big. She pushed it backward and did not breathe for sometime so that her tummy will appear flat.

And whenever her Koko and A-ma would come inside our room, she would encourage them to work out. She would say, “Koko, jump. Koko, swim. Koko, twist.” And the like. She is also very persistent, egging them to work out if they refuse.

These are kids who are in contrast to the obese generation that they are in. Many children are living a sedentary, gadget filled lifestyle that they are prone to lifestyle diseases that mostly plague adults. These kids have already undergone tests like going through ekg machines because there are irregularities in their system brought about by their sedentary lifestyles. Tsk. tsk.

Well, what I can wish that, I can be like Dindin in her conscious attempt to maintain her figure,
